So what might a clinical pharmacist's day look like?

To be honest, all practices are different and every day is different in practice but a day might look like this:

8am - arrive in practice - coffee

8-9.30am - Practice meeting once a week - One of the clinicians will present on a given condition, new medication or patient group followed by practice discussion. My turn this week on Asthma Management.

On non - meeting days - Process acute prescription requests and prescribe within my areas of competence. Process Hospital Discharge Letters - updating the patients repeat medication with any changes made during hospital stay. Liaise with local community pharmacy to make sure any changes to medication are supplied as quickly as possible by processing prescriptions. Call patient to make sure they understand changes.

9.30 -11.30 - Medication Reviews - a combination of level 3 - face to face appointments and level 2 - review of medication using patient notes. All patients have an annual medication review. My practice have a great system in place which means that the patients are called in for bloods and any other investigation prior to review, so decision are made on up to data data.

11.30-12.00 De-brief with GPs, trainee GPs and ANPs. Discuss tricky patient challenges and agree treatment plans.

Lunch 12.30 - 2pm - Complete practice audit work and undertake Medicines Optimisation tasks

ARRS - Can we use Medacy for ARRS roles?

Medacy work with Primary Care Networks (PCNs) across England to deliver Pharmacist-led clinical services funded via the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS).

However, we are a specialist provider and the roles we support are Pharmacy related; Senior Clinical Pharmacist, Clinical Pharmacist and Pharmacy Technician.

I've never worked in practice, can Medacy help me find a job?

At Medacy we get asked a lot to find jobs in Primary Care for pharmacists with a community pharmacy background.

Medacy offer client GP practices and PCNs a clinical service and they client expect a all singing, all dancing service from day one, so unfortunately we can't take on pharmacists or technicians without primary care experience.

All Pharmacists can work in primary care but as as I found out when I first worked in a GP Practice, it's a bit jump, clinically to make the transition. However, if I can make the transition, you can so here are some pointers:

Take any opportunity to shadow a friend of colleague
Look for PCN roles that will enable to to complete the Primary Care Pharmacy Education Pathway (PCPEP)
If you can't find a position with PCPEP linked, the CPPE helpfully provide a PDF of equivalent training
